On Christmas Eve night, with the solemn act of opening the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis officially inaugurated the Jubilee of 2025. A journey of grace, that envelops the entire world in the light of hope, had started. After a moment of silent prayer in the Basilica’s atrium, the Pope was the first to cross the sacred threshold of the Door as a ‘Pilgrim of Hope,’ followed by a solemn procession of cardinals, bishops, concelebrating priests, and families from the five continents. It symbolizied the universality of the Church, united in an embrace of faith and hope. “This is the night when the door of hope was flung open to the world,” the Pope said during his homily. The denominations chosen for the commemorative series of the Holy Year 2025, a tangible expression of this journey of hope, narrate the story of the opening of the Holy Doors of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome and the Rebibbia prison: the €1.25 stamp depicts the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s in the Vatican by the Pontiff; the €1.30 denomination shows the opening of the Rebibbia prison; the following denominations feature paired images of the Holy Doors of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome: St. Peter’s and St. John Lateran on the €2.45 stamp; Santa Maria Maggiore and St. Paul Outside the Walls on the €3.20 stamp.
