40th anniversary of the Encyclical Dominum et Vivificantem

The Vatican commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Encyclical Dominum et Vivificantem, promulgated by Saint John Paul II on 18 May 1986, in tribute to one of the most significant texts of the contemporary pontifical Magisterium, dedicated to reflection on the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church and of the world. The Encyclical, whose title means “The Lord and Giver of Life,” stands within the theological tradition that recognizes the Holy Spirit as the inexhaustible source of renewal, communion, and hope. In the document, Saint John Paul II explores the role of the Holy Spirit in the history of salvation, emphasizing His active presence in the human heart and within the dynamics of society. Particular emphasis is placed on the interior dimension of faith, the mystery of conscience, and the action of the Spirit as guide toward truth and authentic freedom. The souvenir sheet reproduces the fresco Pentecost by the painter Guido Reni, located in the Vatican Museums (Sala delle Dame). Graphic and chromatic elements contribute to conveying a sense of movement and spiritual energy, in harmony with the message of the Encyclical. This issue forms part of the Vatican philatelic tradition of promoting, through the artistic language of the stamp, the fundamental documents of the Magisterium, while also offering a means of cultural and spiritual dissemination. Through this initiative, the aim is to recall the enduring relevance of the message contained in Dominum et Vivificantem, inviting people to rediscover the action of the Holy Spirit as a principle of new life and renewal for the Church and for all humanity.
