Centenary of Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology

On occasion of the centenary of the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology (1925–2025), the Vatican City has issued a commemorative stamp in joint collaboration with Luxembourg to honour a century of studying and enhancing the Christian archaeological heritage. Founded by Pope Pius XI in 1925 with the support of the Luxembourg prelate Johann Peter Kirsch, the P.I.C.A., which is dependent on the Holy See, has promoted research into ancient Christianity and welcomed scholars from around the globe. Over the past hundred years, it has contributed significantly to the study of the art, inscriptions and monuments of early Christian communities by collaborating with universities, museums and international research centres. The joint issue stamp depicts a portrait of Mons. Kirsch, with the emblem of the Institute behind him — featuring the image of Christ as the 'Good Shepherd' in early Christian iconography — and the historic headquarters on Via Napoleone III in Rome. Through this issue, the Postal and Philatelic Service pays tribute to the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology's role as a bridge between faith and science, and between the past and the present. It recognises that research is a valuable tool for knowledge and dialogue between peoples.
