Proclamation of Saint J. H. Newman as Doctor of the Church

The Post and Philately Service celebrates Saint John Henry Newman (1801–1890), a shining figure of the modern Church and tireless witness to the sincere search for truth. Born in London in 1801, Newman distinguished himself from a young age for his brilliant intelligence and profound spirituality. Ordained as an Anglican priest, he was one of the leading figures in the Oxford Movement, committed to rediscovering the Catholic roots of the Church of England. After a long journey of study, prayer and discernment, he fully embraced the Catholic faith in 1845. His conversion represented a crucial moment in the religious history of the nineteenth century: a man of faith and reason, Newman always sought the truth with humility and consistency, even at the cost of great personal sacrifice. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1847, he founded the Oratory of St Philip Neri in Birmingham, a place of prayer, study and apostolate. In 1879, Pope Leo XIII elevated him to the dignity of cardinal, recognising the greatness of his intellectual and spiritual life. He was beatified by Benedict XVI in 2010 and canonised by Pope Francis on 13 October 2019. St John Henry Newman acted as a “bridge” between tradition and modernity, between intellectual research and spirituality, becoming an outstanding model for the universal Church.
