Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Benedict in Norcia

The Postal and Philatelic Service of the Vatican City State is pleased to present a commemorative stamp dedicated to the Basilica of St. Benedict in Norcia, marking its reopening and rededication following restoration work made necessary by the 2016 earthquake, which had severely damaged the building. Erected between 1290 and 1338 on the site traditionally identified as the birthplace of Saints Benedict and Scholastica, the edifice stands as one of the most significant symbols of Benedictine spirituality and European Christian culture. The dedication of the restored Basilica, celebrated this year, represents a sign of hope and renewed spiritual vitality for the entire Church. The stamp’s design, characterized by a sober and luminous composition dominated by white, evokes the light and purity that distinguish the renewed Basilica, a symbol of faith, rebirth, and peace. With this issue, the Vatican City conveys a profound message of hope: from the rubble, whether material or spiritual, it is always possible to be reborn. The image on the stamp depicts Saint Benedict, the “Messenger of Peace”, surrounded by architectural details of the Basilica dedicated to him. The Saint holds in his hands the Rule, recognizable by its incipit “Obsculta, o fili” (“Listen, my son”).
