450 years ago, Giorgio Vasari (Arezzo, 1511 – Florence, 1574) passed away. A multifaceted genius, Vasari was not only an architect—he designed the Uffizi building in Florence—but also one of the most prominent and prolific painters of his time. As a leading figure in the Tuscan artistic scene of the sixteenth century, Vasari helped spread the Tuscan style to the Veneto region, influencing great artists such as Tintoretto. The annual series of Postcards 2024 pays tribute to the great artist by presenting some of his famous works attesting to the Roman period spent by the artist in the employ of Pope Pius V, who commissioned him to decorate some of the Vatican rooms, such as the Pinacoteca, the Sala Regia, some chapels and the staircase of the Apostolic Palace. The case that holds the postcards reproduces the preparatory cartoon for the Adoration of the Magi, attributed to Giorgio Vasari and his workshop, preserved in the Vatican Pinacoteca, and reproduced in its final version on the €1.25 postcard. The €1.30 postcard features a detail from the Battle of Lepanto, a fresco conserved in the Sala Regia of the Apostolic Palace; the €2.45 postcard depicts a portion of the vault of the Chapel of St. Peter Martyr, located in the tower of the Vatican Palaces; and the final postcard, valued at €3.10, reproduces the fresco of the dome of the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel, situated in the Apostolic Palace. The common stamp imprint on all four postcards shows a detail from the scene The Miraculous Draught of Fishes, preserved in one of the lunettes decorating the grand staircase of the Apostolic Palace with Stories of Christ and St. Peter.
