5 euro coloured silver coin year 2024 proof version On the Path with Saint Francis: the Places of Francis
Saint Francis of Assisi is commemorated on the eighth centenary of the miraculous appearance of the Sacred Stigmata with two new coloured silver coins, in denominations of 5 and 20 euros. The reverse of the 5-euro coin, designed by artist Orietta Rossi, delicately portrays the simple and austere façade of the Upper Basilica, an integral part of the sacred complex of the Sanctuary of La Verna. This mystical place is known for having welcomed the Saint in contemplation and prayer when, on 17 September 1224, he received the seal of the stigmata, a profound sign of his union with Christ. On the upper left of the coin, a radiant circular image of the Holy Spirit shines, symbolising divine grace. The design evokes the extraordinary glazed terracotta by Andrea della Robbia, preserved on the high altar of the Chapel of the Stigmata, a silent witness to both faith and art.
