(29-04-2019) V CENT. MORTE L. DA VINCI - MF
The Philatelic Office of the Vatican celebrates Leonardo Da Vinci, undisputed genius of the Italian Renaissance, on the fifth centenary of his death. The miniature sheet produced for the occasion has four values of € 1.15 featuring St. Jerome as depicted in Da Vinci’s artwork found in the Pinacoteca of the Vatican Museums. The painting shows the Saint while he beats his chest with a stone in his right hand. The expression on his face, where suffering is evident but a state of ecstasy is captured at the same time, makes one think of a hermit dedicated to denying the flesh as a way to reach mystical ecstasy. On the left margin space we find Plato, who is depicted looking like Leonardo Da Vinci, a detail of The School of Athens” by Raphael (Vatican Museums).
