The Philatelic and Numismatic Office celebrates the life of Don Lorenzo Milani, an Italian priest and educator from the Diocese of Florence, on the 50th Anniversary of his death, with a 0.95 euro postage stamp. The design by artist Antonella Napolione features mountains and the small church of the town of Barbiana in the background, Father Milani walking along a small road with two of his students, and reference to one of his well-known sayings, "I care", adopted from a motto of young Americans. Pope Francis paid tribute to Father Milani when he visited his tomb in the town of Barbiana on 20 June 2017 as a way to recognize the witness of his life and the exemplary way he served the poor and the Church. The priestly dimension of his service was at the root of all he did, the Pope said. "Everything was born from his being a priest. But, in turn, his being priest had an even more profound root: his faith. It was a totalizing faith, which became complete self-giving to the Lord and that found in the priestly ministry its full and completed form for the converted youth". The Pope noted that Father Milani undertook "unique paths, sometimes too advanced and therefore difficult to understand right away". Pope Francis said, "I would like us to remember him as a believer in love with the Church, even if wounded, and a passionate educator with a vision of schooling that I think responds to the needs of the hearts and intelligence of our young people".
