The postage stamp the Vatican has chosen to celebrate Easter 2024 features work by artist Vitaliy Shtanko showing the moment when the Risen Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene, who was weeping and praying before the tomb. The encounter between the Risen Jesus and Mary Magdalene offers a great message. Mary Magdalene received first the news of Christ’s resurrection and became a witness to it. At the time of Calvary she was together at the foot of the Cross with Mary Most Holy and Saint John (Jn 19:25). She did not flee in fear as the disciples did, she did not deny him as Peter did, but she remained present every hour from the time of her conversion to that of the Holy Sepulchre. She not only represents the mission of the Church called to proclaim the resurrection to the world, but she is also above all a symbol of persevering prayer.
