On 20 May 1120 Pope Callixtus II, on a visit to the city of Volterra, consecrated the new Cathedral, naming it after the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The sacred building was raised to the status of “Minor Basilica” in 1957 with the papal bull of Pius XII, who recognized its special ecclesial, historical and artistic importance. Grandiose in its Romanesque style with a Latin cross plan with three naves, the Cathedral was remodeled and embellished several times over the years, particularly at the end of the 16th century. The postage stamp, jointly issued with the Italian Republic, reproduces the facade. For the occasion, a joint Folder has also been created with Poste Italiane containing, on the part of each of the two postal administrations, a single stamp, a block of four stamps, a postcard and a stamped envelope with DIE EMISSIONIS cancellation.
