This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Inspectorate of Public Security for the service of protecting St. Peter’s Square and of the Popes during their travels in Italy. Vatican City State wishes to celebrate it with the issue of a joint postage stamp with Italy. The Inspectorate was established in 1945 by the then Minister of the Interior and is unique in the world, in that it consists of a police service of the Italian State which exercises its functions within another State. During the meeting that took place last February 8 with the directors and agents of the Inspectorate, the Holy Father wished to express his gratitude for the service rendered to the Holy See and to Vatican City State, defining their presence as “discreet, as well as attentive and effective”, as it allows for uniting the needs of tourists and pilgrims who visit the Vatican daily, with ensuring respect for the indispensable rules of public order and the peaceful unfolding of life around Vatican City and places sacred to the Catholic faith. The stamp reproduces a police car with two officers among tourists visiting St. Peter’s Square pictured in the background.
